For you Trekkers: Music from TAS

These are rips from DVDs. There will never be music CDs of FILMATION music, ever. Back in the early 2000s, Hallmark bought the FILMATION library. The woman then running it digitised the shows from 16mm stock, and then destroyed the masters, the music library, 35mm prints, because she hated FILMATION.

I personally intend never to buy another Hallmark card. FILMATION stuff was drek, much of it - I harbor no illusions - but to destroy the history of creative work, almost spitefully...I lack words.

Perhaps a picture will do.

NBCUniversal (USA Network, Syfy, etc.) and The Hallmark Channel have practically destroyed the made-for-television movie subgenre as far as I'm concerned.

Fortunately I wasn't all that enamored of the music made for ST: TAS. For me, the musical high water mark for the franchise came with the soundtrack for the episode "The Doomsday Machine".

Yes. on NBC/U and Hallmark.

The ST: TAS music (the theme, anyway) was an inversion of the TOS theme, a practise I have always ben fascinated with. I enjoyed their action bits as well, but across the warped palette that was the Filmation CV, there is a lot of neat incidental music, and now it is lost. To quote Scotty "Forever LOST!"

Absolutely YES to "The Doomsday Machine". I think that it is my favorite episode all around.

Except of course for the subtlety found in the black-and-white cookie episode in season 3. Frank Gorshin, Lou Antonio...like that.

(Ducks a well-aimed Masterspy puppethead.)

Yeah, "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" was about as subtle as a bowel movement. But I'm a sucker for Frank Gorshin performances so I don't throw it out the window entirely.

"The Doomsday Machine" was definitely one of the most dramatic and fast-paced examples of SF for television, and Sol Kaplan's music fitted perfectly. It proves that talent outshines budget every time.
