GOG

I watched GOG, the creaky Ivan Tors sci-fi flick. GREAT popcorn movie, which has
really neat and comically menacing robots, "Gog" and "Magog".

One of them.

Tors made talky sci-fi movies and TV series, though English was not his native language. His mildly celebrated OSI trilogy of films (1953's The Magnetic Monster, 1954's Riders to the Stars, and GOG, also from '54) follow agents of the Office of Scientific Investigation as they confront various science-induced dangers to The Free World. GOG is the final film of the series, and the most involved.

Hear what Wikipedia saith:
Unaccountable, deadly malfunctions begin occurring at a top-secret government facility under the New Mexico desert where a space station is being constructed. Agents from the Office of Scientific Investigation (OSI) in Washington, D.C. are called in to investigate.
Laboratory supervisor Dr. Van Ness calls in Dr. David Sheppard, an OSI security agent, to find the cause of the mysterious deaths. Working with Joanna Merritt, another OSI agent already at the facility, Sheppard determines that the deaths among the laboratory's 150 top scientists are due to deliberate sabotage of NOVAC (Nuclear Operative Variable Automatic Computer), a central computer that controls all equipment in the underground facility.
However, it is harder to determine how the sabotage is being done. The unseen enemy strikes again and again, snuffing out the lives of five scientists and two human test subjects in quick succession, as well as Major Howard, the complex's Chief of Security. In addition, both Madame Elzevir (solar engineering scientist) and Dr. Peter Burden (chief atomic engineer) are attacked, but manage to survive, although they are both injured.
Eventually, Sheppard determines that a powerful radio transmitter and receiver were secretly built into NOVAC during its construction. An enemy robot plane, whose fiberglass body does not register on radar, has been flying overhead, beaming precisely focused, ultra-high frequency radio signals, thereby controlling NOVAC's every function. The computer, in turn, controls Gog and Magog, two mobile robots with multiple arms, powerful gripping tools, and other implements.
Magog is finally directed to go to the complex's nuclear reactor room and pull the safety rod out of the atomic pile, starting a chain reaction that will soon build to a nuclear explosion, which will destroy the entire facility. Sheppard arrives in time to push the safety rod back into the pile, stopping the chain reaction. He then attacks the robot with a flame thrower and disables it, but Gog soon follows its twin to the reactor room to finish the job. Sheppard's flame thrower runs out of fuel as the robot advances on him. Dr. Van Ness arrives with another flame thrower, but the control valve sticks, and Gog now turns on him. Sheppard desperately begins using the nozzle of his flame thrower as a bludgeon, trying to smash the robot's electronic tubes. The now-crippled robot begins spinning back and forth, its arms thrashing about wildly. At that point, Gog suddenly comes to a halt, its metal arms falling limply to its sides. American F-86 and F-94 jet fighters have found and destroyed the enemy plane, ending NOVAC's reign of destruction. Van Ness then realizes that Sheppard and Merritt have been exposed to an overdose of radiation from the reactor, and Sheppard takes Merritt into his arms and they head for the complex hospital, where it is determined that their exposure, while causing their film badges to turn red, is not serious, and that they will soon recover.

A few days later, Dr. Van Ness explains the situation to the Secretary of Defense, and informs him that a working model of the space station is about to be launched into orbit. The new station will be equipped with telescopes and television cameras that will spot any further attempts to sabotage the complex in this fashion. The Secretary observes with satisfaction, "Nothing will take us by surprise again!" The film concludes with the successful launch of the rocket containing the working model from the complex.

Wiki kindly glosses over the major visual gaffe of the piece: Sabre jets scramble to intercept the hostile intruder, yet F-94C Starfires do the Deed.

F-94C Starfire

William Schallert dies unpleasantly.

Michael Fox (no relation) dies horribly by remote control at the beginning of the film. To hammer home the point that the bad guys are really bad, his lovely assistant finds him in the low-temperature chamber used for suspended animation experiments, and is then killed in the same grisly manner. Their flash-frozen bodies are later found shattered, according to a conversation...no people shards are seen. The horror remains nonetheless.

Pub-D-Hub has the film, and it is also available on YouTube

Enjoy! Don't forget the Jiffy-pop!

During the Air Force jet scramble, the aircraft shown are F-86 Sabre Jets, while most of the airborne shots are of rocket equipped Lockheed F-94C Starfires.

SHort, but it's all I got.....

Guys, this is important. This afternoon (Wed) my right eye felt like it had an eyelash in it. As the evening has progressed, it has become increasingly inflamed, and is what I would call " zombie eye". My vision is fine except for the tears and...stuff.
Prayers are appreciated, and wise counsel. I'm going to the doc in the morning, and expect an uber round of antibiotics in the offing.
I have resisted the irrational urge to use alcohol as an eyewash...

UPDATE: been to the doctor. Have bacterial conjunctivitis in one eye. Have a 10-day run of antibiotics, and a tube of AB ointment to squirt in my eye. The oral meds have given me a systemic taste in my mouth. It tastes like these would (Art by my son Noel)

Dear Mr. Governor Congressman Kasich:
You're not helping. You're freaking people out with your Judeo-Christian talk. Some people IMMEDIATELY went to worrying about your forcing an all-Christian nation.
Frankly, I don't know which is the more foolish, you or them.
It is not in the purview of the US government to promote one religion over another (despite what the current President seems to think), or promoting one at all. I should not wish to receive spiritual instruction by way of a bureaucracy, any more than I should wish my children to be taught to pray in a government school (please note: I use my words very precisely).
You are not helping the spread of the faith by giving people nightmares of Jesus posters with "Big Brother Is Watching" written on them.
Just stop.

----------------------

Gigglesome, it is!
The people who ordinarily do not give a tinker's dam (not a cuss...look it up) about the Constitution are now all "WE MUST FOLLOW THE CONSTITUTION!!!" to get a new Supreme Court Justice of Mr. Obama's ilk.

----------------------

Please, dear conspiracy folk. the term is "martial law" NOT "marshall law".

----------------------

So the presidential candidates' races once again come down, not to the real issues, but about who can have the bigger fanboys and fangirls.
Inspiring.

----------------------

I have been whinging for years about the deterioration of con attendees. A dear (younger) friend of mine said this about the stupid vandalism done at an established con this weekend:

"I swear people acted so much better at anime conventions when I was younger. I think the fact that nerdy stuff is so mainstream and accepted now that more rowdy people go. Before it was just hardcore nerds, now it's anyone that's seen a Marvel movie."
THIS:
"Before it was just hardcore nerds, now it's anyone that's seen a Marvel movie."
It's called being a trufan.

---------------------

The thing that is the MOST off-putting, and renders their opinions null and void, is the progressive (and I said "PROgressive, because that is the correct term) habit of heaping ill-will and schadenfreude on their opponents in the event of their sickness or death. I do not get it. It is less than human, especially in those whose stock-in-trade is "compassion".

Messages of Sending

The "magic dirt" theory is tragic. Crossing the border and setting foot on American soil will not confer "Good American" powers to the crosser. This is akin to expecting your little sister to be able to effectively play Dungeons and Dragons wandering into your game, when all she has played before is "Candyland" . Public education is not helping, because the history texts are anemic. Just being here will not bring the immigrant (documented or not) up to speed with what has made America, America. Growing up in oppressive socialist regimes is what they will bring with them, rather like the people who flee California because of taxes and oppressive regulation, then proceed to turn Montana into the very thing they fled from, because that is what they know.
Immigrants' studying of American History and successfully being tested on it used to be a requirement for citizenship.
Perhaps this should be a requirement across the board, even if you're born here.

I love it when commenters refer to "Anonymous" as an individual.

I have a VERY high tolerance for woowoo. That said, last night I woke up, and "Caravan to Midnight" was playing on my cell phone.
The guest was named "Aurora Light", and the host, normally level-headed and polite in the face of the incredible, called her story "woowoo" to her face, and kept making aside comments, all in good humor, and Ms. Light took it in stride. She came across like Scully and Mulder at the Waffle House, and Aurora was their new-age waitress.
I actually had to turn it off.

I saw this quote regarding Bernie Sanders' loss in Iowa:
"I think this is a big win for him"

The spin is reaching lightspeed.
(This is not an endorsement, it is a comment.)
The Trump upset is being described as "Iowa voting AGAINST Trump". That is pure spin. Iowa voted FOR Cruz, and then FOR Trump.
Math is hard.

That said, a word of admonition:
The word is "pundit", not "pun-DINT".

Withering Heights

WVNN advert guy.
Put DOWN the Hi-Q music library...
Back slowly away.

This guy drops "Donna Reed music" behind every straight VO national ad they get. He also thinks he's the new Daws Butler. Tragic, really.

Charter, I was considering doing cable again.
You do not carry NHK World.
You LOSE.
Good DAY, sir.

UN Thinking:
“Land…cannot be treated as an ordinary asset, controlled by individuals and subject to the pressures and inefficiencies of the market. Private land ownership is also a principal instrument of accumulation and concentration of wealth, therefore contributes to social injustice.” From the report from the 1976 UN’s Habitat I Conference.

My comment on "FairTax"discussion:

Y'know, guys, if all the people who sagely intone "It'll never happen" worked toward it, well, it could happen.

----------------
I am worn out with "conservative" pages whining the endless whine about the President, and Congress, and the Senate, and the Supremes, and lobbyists...but none of them are ganging up to go to Washington to clog the marble halls and demand serious face-time with every single rep and senator there, literally clogging up the works until what we want gets done.
Forget about "sacred honor"...these people cannot be bothered to hop a bus to Washington.

----------------

I am an animation voice guy. No, not a voice actor, but an aficionado of fine and vintage voice artists. Most of what people my age grew up with was thanks to old time radio actors moving into the new medium of television. We had men and women who could portray characters convincingly by voice alone, unlike the pretty-face actors employed today for name recognition, who mumble their way through their roles with colorless tapioca pudding readings.
This rant being made, I was watching the original "Jonny Quest" series whilst printing last night, and realised with horror that rather than have the credits specific to each episode, the DVD producers cookie-cuttered one set of credits onto all of the episodes, effectively expunging many fine voice actors like Vic Perrin (a real JQ workhorse...I mean, they left out the voice actor of DOCTOR ZIN??!) and J. Pat O'Malley. Such laziness I despise, and frankly, I find it akin to erasing several signers of the Declaration of Independence. One should receive credit for one's efforts.

"The X Files" is not having to find its stride. It hit it on the first step.

----------------

As much as I love the Eagles from Space:1999 (really, the best actors in the show!) I would not trust one on atmospheric re-entry.
Weatherly Hardy's photo.

----------------

I love that "The X Files" is being sponsored by "X-COM 2".

----------------

If the con wants you to sign a "Code of Conduct" document to attend, or vend, say goodbye. Big Brother is watching.

My concern is the burgeoning popularity of con CoCs, especially in the sci fi cons. If you don't read carefully, you can wind up being sacked for saying something verboten, or harboring Hurtful Opinions, or Triggering.

I am not overstating this.

----------------
MAJOR X-Files spoiler, cos I don't care!! Scully tries to talk Mulder out of beliefs.
