Welcome to "The Aardvark's Plumbline (and Paul Frees Appreciation Society)".
Frank Tashlin (who wrote the book) ceased speaking to Jones after this. His main problem was that by smoking the cigarette, the bear had de facto given in to being a silly man, who needs a shave, and wears a fur coat. Sent the wrong message.
That's not the message I got, but I also know that some creative people can become totally unglued by someone else's interpretation of their work.
